Through painting, Catherine explores the landscape from a perceptual as well as from a conceptual perspective. Oil sketches and works on paper completed en plein air, are the source for paintings, made in the studio. This process allows her to base the paintings on what is seen and what is remembered.

Catherine’s paintings tell the story of the landscape through the exchange between land and water and how the built environment coexists with the natural landscape. The presence or memory of water often guides the composition to reflect the importance of water in the Northern California ecosystem.

As an art educator, with over 20 years of experience teaching in public schools,  Catherine specializes in arts-based environmental education, and has designed a curriculum which guides children to explore the patterns of nature through a visual arts lens. She currently teaches art at a public elementary school in San Rafael.
