Diablo Series/Container Ships

Much of my recent work depicts the view from Mt. Davidson ( a short hike from my home in Miraloma Park, San Francisco) to Mt, Diablo, the highest peak in the East Bay, a distance of about 50 miles.  The scene is sublime- a coalescence of city, bay, atmosphere and mountain with Diablo peeking out over the Oakland Hills.   Picturesque boats seem float delicately across the water until a closer look reveals what is for me,  the reality of the scene - the staggering number of container ships as they travel in and out of the San Francisco Bay.

Sometimes the size of four football fields, these floating warehouses are, as we all know a critical element of today's trans global economy.  To me they seem like some kind of strange invasion, a flotilla of giants, coming and going at a constant pace, slicing through the bay with their enormous hulls, the size of buildings, packed with the things we all can't help but require.

I have always been interested how wetlands and water ways are subjected to human needs. Currently the San Francisco Bay feels like a superhighway for oil tankers and container ships.
