Working in Series

Why work in series? This practice has structured the way I think about my work since my days at the the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. My painting instructor, Susana Coffey gave a semester long assignment where we created 20 pieces related to one subject of our choice. I chose to paint a friend who let me paint as they went about their daily routines over the course of a few months. In the process, we became very close and still remain so 25 years later. The 20 pieces came to represent a whole portrait, with works on paper and small oil paintings. Now that I am doing place-based work, working in series deepens the experience of relating to a place over time. Each series evolves as the perceptual process shifts and expands.
